A new study by MassINC shows that our commutes are getting worse at a faster rate than in all but five other states. The average commute is 27 minutes each way. Part of the solution is enhancing public transit.
A few more details from the study:
18 percent of Massachusetts workers spend at least 90 minutes commuting each day. That’s 552,000 people.
In longest average commute time, Massachusetts has moved from 14th to 9th since 1980.
The causes? People moving farther away from Boston in search of affordable homes, and a big jump in the number of cars on the road.
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of cars registered in Massachusetts increased by 48 percent.
Massachusetts workers’ use of public transportation is about 9 percent.
