Green Line Extension Friends –
We are pleased to announce that the Green Line Extension (GLX) project has recently reached another important milestone, and we wanted to share the news with you. MassDOT and the MBTA have awarded the contract for pre-construction services for the Construction Manager-General Contractor (CM/GC) for the GLX Project to White Skanska Kiewit, JV (WSK) – a joint venture consisting of J. F. White Contracting Co., Skanska USA Civil Northeast, Inc. and Kiewit Infrastructure Company.
As you may know, Phase 1 of the GLX project is currently underway with contractor Barletta Heavy Division, Inc. providing construction services for the widening of two railroad bridges in Somerville and Medford and the demolition of an MBTA facility in Cambridge.
The remainder of the project, Phases 2/2A, 3 and 4 will be completed by the CM/GC. The CM/GC will be responsible for performing preconstruction and construction services for the work associated with extending the Green Line from a new, relocated Lechmere Station along the Medford Branch to a point in the vicinity of College Avenue in Medford and along the Union Square Branch to Union Square in Somerville. On July 19, 2013 WSK received their Notice to Proceed for pre-construction services as CM/GC for the project.
The CM/GC project delivery method is an integrated team approach to the planning, design, and construction of a project. The delivery method incorporates procedures to better control the schedule, budget, and quality. The CM/GC method is expected to better plan for and manage risks, to enhance quality, decrease cost, and compress the delivery period.
The new CM/GC team will be collocated in the new GLX office in Boston with the MBTA, the HDR/Gilbane Program Manager/Construction Manager (PM/CM) team and the AECOM/HNTB design team. This collocation allows for the teams to work closely together on the design and implementation the project.
With the selection of White Skanska Kiewit, JV as CM/GC for the project, even more work can now begin to go forward in bringing the Green Line from Cambridge to Somerville and Medford. As always, thank you for your interest in and support of the Green Line Extension.
